In 1979, in Culver City, California, I witnessed my parents, filled with nostalgia for their childhood home in India, open the first International Grocery Store of its kind in a small Los Angeles suburb. I grew up in that shop, and that time instilled in me the love, understanding, and passion for the spices, food, and each other that defines our brand today. Difference Between Anise Seeds and Star Anise The main difference is that aniseed is a small brown-colored seed, while star anise is a seed pod with a star shape. Although the names are similar, they refer to two different types of spices from plants of different families. However, both have a pungent licorice flavor due to the presence of anethole, an essential oil.
Culinary Uses of Star Anise Star anise is most often used in Asian cooking and is the main ingredient in Chinese "five-spice" powder. Both can be used interchangeably when ground, but Star Anise has a much stronger flavor, so when replacing it with aniseed, use twice the amount.
